Sworn translations

When do you need a sworn translation?

A sworn translation, also called a certified translation, is often required for official documents that must be submitted to (often foreign) authorities. The translation must be done by a sworn translator and a statement with the translator's stamp and signature must be attached to the translation.

Requirements, registration and obligations

A sworn translator is included in the Office of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv) and is registered with at least one court in the Netherlands. A sworn translator must meet strict criteria, including a diploma or certificate from a translation course at at least bachelor's level and/or a translation test at C1 level, must meet all criteria for permanent education and have a certificate of conduct. Before being sworn in, the translator must take an oath or vow before the court and must, among others, maintain confidentiality regarding any confidential information that is seen.

Apostille

In addition to a sworn translation, legalisation may sometimes be necessary. This is often the case when a sworn translation is requested for a foreign agency. If the country in question is a member of the Apostille Convention (List of countries affiliated with the Apostille Convention) then an apostille on the sworn translation is sufficient. You can easily collect the apostille yourself at the court or you can ask us to do it for you, which we are of course happy to do.
